2022 Thunder Reading Challenge

We had three Thunder Reading Challenges from July 2022, through February 2023. More than 1.6 million minutes were read by 3,655 students.

Teacher of the Game

In partnership with the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, 610 teachers have been honored since 2008, with 41 in the spotlight through the 2022-23 season.

Thunder Book Bus

In 2022, we distributed 13,331 books to students across Oklahoma, bringing the program total to 195,962 books.

Book Giveaways

As of May, 2023, we’ve given away more than 204,000 books, through nearly 2,600 visits since inception.

Thunder Reading Timeouts

We sponsored seven in-person Reading Timeouts in the 2022-23 Thunder season, each aligned with a specific culture month and our diversity, equity and inclusion goals.
  • 210 students impacted.

Thunder Regional Spelling Bee

AF sponsored the Thunder Regional Spelling Bee, furthering our support of the education industry and the future of our students.
  • 152 schools participated in the 2022-23 bee.
  • 65 counties were represented.
  • 25 students attended the regional spelling bee and one advanced to the National Spelling Bee in Maryland in June.

Thunder Educator Offer

Working with the Oklahoma City Thunder, we provide an exclusive ticket offer to educators across Oklahoma.
  • In the 2022-2023 season, 10,534 free tickets were redeemed by educators.

KMGL Teacher of the Month

Eight teachers were honored during the 2022-23 school year, each receiving recognition on the radio broadcast and $250.

STEM Teachers Join AF

AF hires STEM teachers over the summer to provide real-world experience they can take back to their students. Teachers earn a corporate IT salary while at AF and a stipend for classroom supplies.
  • 44 teachers have participated since program inception in 2019.
  • In 2022, we welcomed 15 teachers from 14 different districts.

A Strong Impact

John Rex Scholarship Keeps Giving
Colleagues’ children in undergraduate programs can apply for a $2,000 annual scholarship, with the potential up to $8,000. Three students receive the scholarship each year, one being designated to go to a minority student.
  • 34 scholarships have been given since inception in 2007.
Proudly Supporting the WNBA Dallas Wings
  • Sponsored Military Welcome at 18 home games in 2022.
  • Sponsored the Hoops for Heroes event
    • 150 thank-you cards filled out by fans and sent to local military veterans from AF and Wings
    • Recognized eight local heroes in game
Helping Cristo Rey Students Grow
American Fidelity hosted four Cristo Rey students at our office during the 2022-2023 school year, allowing them to gain work experience in areas at AF.
  • Program began in 2018-19 school year
  • Hosted 20 students since program inception
Paid Volunteer Time
Colleagues can use up to 16 hours of Paid Volunteer Time per year to volunteer at charitable organizations that are important to them.
  • In 2022, Colleagues used 1,665 hours of paid volunteer time for non-profit organizations.

Granting Opportunities

  • Volunteer Grants allow Colleagues to earn $10 per hour for non-profit charitable organizations they volunteer for.
    • $1,820 paid to organizations in 2022
  • Board Service Grants allow Colleagues serving on non-profit charity boards to request a $1,000 donation in their name for the organization they serve.
    • $24,107 paid in 2022

Community Connection

Our online forum allows Colleagues to share volunteer opportunities, donation needs and community fundraisers.

Buchanan Elementary Support

AF has been supporting students and staff at Buchanan Elementary for more than 15 years.

  • Each year we provide all staff members a T-shirt to proclaim their affiliation with the school.
  • AF donated candy and bags for Buchanan’s trunk-or-treat night, lunches to celebrate the staff, facility space for leadership training and more during the 2022-23 school year.
  • Colleagues donated $1,484 in our annual school supply drive.
  • AF donated $2,500 to support the Coat-A-Kid campaign, supplying coats for the students at Buchanan Elementary.

The AF Foundation sponsors Thrive Outside, supporting the encouragement of a culture shift for our youth to lead more active, outdoor lifestyles.
